Banquette seating is built into a corner or against a wall, which means the back works against that wall while the front edge carries everyone getting in and out. An L-Shape puts a corner seat where the two runs meet, and that seat is both the hardest to reach and the most awkward to leave, which is why the arm-facing versions exist for rooms where only one wall is available to build against.
