Hand Knotted Jute Area Rug – Natural Colorway, 8x10 to 10x14

Jute, hand knotted, in its natural undyed color, at three large sizes. Undyed jute is never quite one color: the stalk fiber runs from pale straw to a deeper tan depending on which part of the plant it came from, and a rug woven from it carries that variation across the whole field rather than presenting a single even tone.

Hand knotting a plant fiber is different work from knotting wool. Jute is stiff and does not compress, so the knots sit firm and the surface stays flat instead of developing a pile that can be crushed underfoot. That makes for a hard-wearing floor, though a less forgiving one to stand on than wool. Jute also takes up moisture readily, and that is the fiber's real limitation rather than any question of wear.

Keep it on dry indoor floors: a living room, a study, a bedroom. It is a poor choice for a bathroom, a basement or a porch, where damp air alone is enough to work into the fiber over a season.
