Cane sits under tension in its frame, and that tension is what makes the back feel supportive rather than slack. It is also why a caned back weighs far less than a solid one without giving up much support: load spreads across the whole woven field instead of through a single panel. The wood surround holds that tension, so the groove the cane seats into is the detail that decides how long the back stays taut.
