Travertine is a limestone formed in mineral springs, and its defining feature is the pitting — small natural voids running through the stone, left open rather than filled, so the surface carries visible texture instead of a polished face.

Those voids are why travertine reads so differently from marble under a light. Where marble is dense and reflects evenly, travertine catches light in and around every pit, so a lit travertine surface shows fine shadow across its whole face and looks different depending on the angle the light strikes it from. Being a natural stone, the pattern of voids belongs to each piece alone. The wood alongside it keeps the fixture from being entirely cold.
