A single shelf in dark brown mahogany, at 39.5 or 66 inches, mounted so that nothing shows beneath it. Floating means the support is concealed inside the shelf and the wall, so the board appears to project straight out of the surface with no bracket underneath.

All of a floating shelf's load is a cantilever. Weight applied at the front edge tries to rotate the shelf downward, and everything resisting that happens where the shelf meets the wall, which is why what sits behind the plaster matters more than the shelf itself does. The 66 inch version spans further, so it crosses more framing but also gives more length over which to deflect. Mahogany is dense and stable enough to stay straight across that run.

Above a desk, over a fireplace, or in a run down a hallway. A floating shelf keeps a wall reading as a wall, which a bracketed one does not.
