Covering a modular sofa module by module is more work than throwing one sheet over the whole run, and it is also better protection. A single large cover bridges the gaps between modules and leaves the inner faces exposed where the sections meet, which is exactly where water collects and sits. Individual covers close each module on all sides, and they let a module be uncovered for use without the rest of the sofa being uncovered with it.

Count the modules before ordering. Cover each once it has dried, and keep the hems clear of standing water on the terrace.
