Cast Glass Table Lamp – Brown Glass Base with Linen Shade

The base of this lamp is cast glass in brown — glass poured into a mold rather than blown, which gives it a thickness and a weight that blown glass never has. Cast glass carries the small internal bubbles and slight shifts in density that come from pouring, so the brown deepens and lightens across the body of the base instead of holding one flat tone throughout.

A glass base does something no opaque base can: it passes light. Switched on, the base glows from the light travelling down through it, so the lamp works as two light sources rather than one. Brown glass warms what it transmits instead of cooling it. The linen shade above handles the upward and outward light, breaking it up through the weave, while the glass handles what falls to the tabletop.
