Mahogany Wood Sculpture – Organic Shape Shelf and Console Decor

An organic shape follows no drawn geometry, so this piece has no flat plane to orient it and no obvious front. It sits differently depending on which face is set down, which is a real variable rather than a turn of phrase. Two finishes are offered: Mahogany, and a deeper Dark Brown Mahogany that closes down the contrast in the grain.

Carving a curved form from solid mahogany takes advantage of one particular property of the timber, its interlocked grain, in which the fibers alternate direction between growth layers. That makes mahogany harder to split and far more forgiving of a cut running across the grain, which is exactly what a curved surface demands at every point along it. It also means the finished surface shifts in light as the grain direction turns underneath.

It belongs on a shelf, a console, or a coffee table among objects of other materials. Wood is usually the thing missing from a shelf styled with ceramic, glass and metal.
