Brass & Cast Iron Wall Sconce – Black or White, Hallway & Bedroom

Cast iron is the distinguishing material here — poured into a mold rather than pressed or bent from sheet, which gives it thickness, a slight softness at the edges, and considerably more mass than a sheet metal fixture of the same dimensions.

That mass is felt rather than seen. A cast iron sconce sits solid against a wall and neither rings nor flexes when it is touched, where a pressed sheet fixture will do both. Cast iron is stiff enough that the arm holds its geometry indefinitely rather than gradually dropping, and the brass supplies the fittings and detail where a warmer metal is wanted against the iron.
