Ceramic Decor Vessel – Aged Black Terracotta Tabletop Vase

Sized for a tabletop, which sets it apart from a floor vessel or a mantel piece: it will be seen from above as often as from the side, so the opening is part of the design rather than something to be hidden by whatever goes in it. The finish is aged black over terracotta.

What aged means on a ceramic surface is deliberate unevenness. A uniform black would read as a modern glaze, and breaking that uniformity so the clay shows at high points while the black pools in recesses imitates the way a real surface wears, thinning wherever hands and cloths have passed over it for years. Fired clay is one of the few materials on which this can be done convincingly, because the body underneath is already the right color to show through.

On a dining table it works alone as a centerpiece without needing to be filled. On a shelf it groups with other vessels at varying heights, where the dark finish anchors the arrangement.
