Ceramic Pendant Light – Tan Speckled Glaze, Dining & Kitchen Island

A ceramic pendant finished in a tan speckled glaze. Speckling comes from particles suspended in the glaze that fire differently from the body around them, so the flecks are set into the surface rather than printed onto it. They cannot rub off with cleaning, and their distribution is different on every shade that comes out of the kiln.

Optically, ceramic behaves like a metal shade — opaque, directing all its light downward — but it behaves quite differently to the hand and to the eye. It has real thickness and a soft matte face, and the tan glaze warms the look of the fixture even when it is switched off. Fired glaze is also a genuinely hard surface, which counts for something in a kitchen, where a shade collects cooking grease and has to be wiped down periodically.

It hangs over a kitchen island or a dining table, and it earns its place in rooms full of hard cool surfaces — stone counters, stainless appliances, tile — where a warm speckled ceramic is one of the few soft-looking things at eye level.
