Burnished Brass Pendant Light – Aluminum Shade, Dining & Kitchen

A pendant with a burnished brass fitting and an aluminum shade. Aluminum is the reason the shade can be wide without being heavy — a broad shade in steel or solid brass would put real load on a ceiling fixing, while aluminum keeps the weight down and lets the shade spread out over the surface below. The burnished brass at the fitting is the warm detail set against the cooler metal of the shade.

A metal shade is opaque, so all of the light travels downward in a defined cone rather than leaking outward through the sides. Over a kitchen island or a dining table that is generally the point: light on the work surface, not on the walls. Aluminum also moves heat away quickly, which keeps the shade from becoming the heat trap that a fully enclosed glass shade can turn into.

Hang it over an island, a run of counter, or a dining table — anywhere the light needs to land on a defined surface. Because the light is directional, spacing matters more than it would with a diffusing shade: gaps between pendants show up as gaps in the light.
