A saturated color exposes every shortcut in a rug's construction, which is part of why hand knotting suits it. Each knot holds its own dyed tuft, so the field carries slight variation from tuft to tuft, and that variation is what keeps a strong color from looking like a printed sheet laid on the floor. Wool takes red-browns deeply, holding the color inside the fiber rather than on its surface.

At these sizes the rug sets the temperature of a whole room, and the rest of the palette gets built around it rather than the reverse. It works against pale walls and wood. It is difficult to place in a room that already carries a strong competing color.
