Polypropylene is the standard fiber at a door for good reasons. It takes up almost no water, so the mat does not stay soaked after rain and does not develop the smell a damp natural-fiber mat gets within a season. It also holds dyed color under direct sun better than most fibers, which matters on something that may sit outside a door all year. Underneath, a rubber backing keeps the mat flat on tile, wood or concrete rather than sliding when a door sweeps across it.

The smaller size fits a standard single door. The larger suits a wider entry or a mudroom threshold where more than one person passes at a time. Shake it out or hose it down, then let it dry before it goes back.
