Hand Carved Area Rug – Navy Colorway, Carved Pile, 5x8 to 10x14

Carving is a finishing step rather than a weave. Once the pile is in place, the outline of the design is cut down by hand so the pattern stands in relief against a lower ground. In a single colorway like Navy that relief is the entire pattern: there is no second color doing the work, only depth and the shadow it throws.

A carved pile needs enough height to cut into, which makes this a deeper rug than a flatweave and a softer one to stand on. The cut edges catch light differently from the standing pile beside them, so the design appears and recedes as you move across the room. Vacuum with the direction of the pile rather than against it to keep the carved lines crisp.

Four sizes, starting at 5' x 8', the only one small enough for a bedside or a study, with 8' x 10', 9' x 12' and 10' x 14' above it. Navy sits well against wood and pale walls, and it wants decent light for the carving to show at all.
